Notes are getting a little more dynamic in a new feature rolling out for Instagram today.
The social media platform is launching the option for users to leave notes directly on Reels or feed posts, parent company Meta announced. Meta also owns Facebook and WhatsApp.
Notes previously appeared at the top of the inbox or above the profile photo. The update allows users to share notes on posts from friends or brands, reacting (ostensibly) in real time, and see reactions from others while scrolling.
Only your friends can see your notes, which you can share either with followers you follow back or those in your "close friends" group. Someone is more likely to see a post or reel when a note has been added, according to Meta.
While the inbox and profile notes are viewable for up to 24 hours, notes on feed posts and Reels will be visible for up to three days and seem to only show in the app and not appear when on a web browser. Notes can be deleted at any time, though.
If you don't want the notes feature on content you share, you can turn them off for your posts and reels in settings.
How the new Instagram Notes feature works
Here's how to use the new IG Notes feature:
- Tap the airplane/share icon
- Tap on the "Note" icon on the bottom left
- Select either "close friends" or "followers you follow back"
- Post the note
Congratulations on your engagement.

Other recent Instagram updates
Instagram also recently introduced a few new features for Stories, including:
- "Add Yours Music" sticker: A new sticker in Instagram Stories allowing users to share songs with the popular "add yours" feature
- Frames: Similar to a Polaroid, you can share a photo that your followers can shake to reveal.
- Reveal: You can post a hidden story, and your followers will need to send you a DM to see it.
- Cutouts: You can turn your camera roll photos or videos into custom stickers in Stories.
