Authorities are responding to Utah Lake outside of Provo, Utah after a small plane crashed into the body of water on Friday near the Provo Airport.
Sgt. Spence Cannon, public information officer for the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe two people were in the plane as it crashed. He said the first reports of the crash came in at around 10 a.m. local time.
“We have seen video of the crash, based on how the crash happened we believe it would be very unlikely that any occupants of the plane would survive,” Cannon said.
Cannon also said that the plane is currently submerged under eight and a half feet of water.
By Friday afternoon, a private barge as well as divers were attempting to pull the plane out of the lake, but officials had recovered some debris from the crash.
The crash is under investigation
In a post on X, the National Transportation Safety Board said its team is currently investigating the crash.
The NTSB identified the plane as a Cirrus SR22.
